Society likes its certainty;
its binaries and boxes and exactitudes.
But when society gets that certainty, we lose our revolutionaries.
When society gets its proof for all
of the how and why and what are you?...
We lose our light,
our capacity to love more deeply, and
our actually different ways of seeing, of doing, and of BEing in the world.
trans-heroes, quiet revolutionaries, soldiers of love
are the keepers of possibility;
They are the proof for all of the ways that we have gone before;
all of the ways that we have survived
all of the ways we are human.
Our elders are the words to our stories,
and the reason we can speak them at all.
the words to tell our stories have been so scarce;
so scarce and so, so sacred,
that we have planted and tended to every single one of them ourselves.
We have cultivated every tiny,
precious piece of knowing
so that every single one of us can really know what it tastes, sounds, looks, feels like to build something real.
Something like history.
Something like family.
like a tangible foot-hold in this world.
Because you know,
that is how
we are still here at all.
Because here is a gift that we have fought forever
to learn how to give ourselves.
We are still here at all thanks to all of the moments that our elders are still here with us.
They are all of the in between.
They are all of the energy,
the light and the matter,
that bind us together
They are how we can even begin to fathom
what we need to learn from this journey;
from stardust to soil,
from the atmosphere to the earth,
and from every single
gender-queer both/and two-spirit
from the hearts of each other
to our selves.
We are a family in and because of this journey and it is our elders who ground us enough in our shared experiences to be seen, to be safe, and to believe in a future that is less full of hurt.
Our elders protect our language by embodying our stories.
Their presence in our lives helps us to remember how we got to “here” and to understand exactly why we have both the right and the responsibility to stay.
The contribution of an elder is not always about organized leadership;
an official title,
an identifiable role,
or even an absolute place/space in the visible of things.
It is about showing up…
It is about BEing.
It is about continuing to BE with all of your heart...
With all of your spirit and truth and experience
and love and kindness and self.
To BE in a way that helps to balance the other extremes
that would beat us down if they could.
And that is why you cannot go.
That is why you are needed,
We need you here,
but that does not mean that you cannot rest
into all that you have helped to build.
The reality of our history is significant,
but this weight is not on top of you.
You are the root system in the way that you are in all of us.
You are as much a part of the stardust patterning the sky
as you are of the soil and the water…. the branches and blood of this tree.
You are much of this structural integrity,
but the balance is not yours to hold.
You. Are. Essential.
And with all of our thanks,
for all that you are,
you are not alone.
